2011 Company of the Year Nominations
Crown Roofing & Drainage, Vancouver BC
We had a very slow start for the first 6 months this year and business didn’t look good at all. Then when work starting coming in…each and everyone of us pitched in and worked extremely hard…and that in turn generated more work. Our combined contributions have made up for all lost time, revenue and business and we still have 6 weeks to go until the end of the year! Hard work started from the top, the boss, Jason Bradley. It trickles down to the last part time student helping us out. Despite the difficulties we had, we still make time for the committee. We donated to various hospitals, Ronald MacDonald House (for sick children) and we collect/donate to the food bank. We’ve even done pro bono work for seniors! There really is Karma…we’ve done what we can for the committee and somehow the committee has given us work and business in return.
Dial One Window Replacement Specialists, Laguna Hills CA
The year started for Dial One at its annual kick off meeting. All of our employees boarded a bus on the first Saturday in January and were taken to the Ritz Carlton hotel in Laguna Niguel, CA. When the bus arrived at the hotel, the bellman rolled out a red carpet for our employees as they disembarked from the bus and entered the hotel and walked to a beautiful meeting room where a gourmet breakfast was served and the meeting was held.
At the meeting, the 2011 company goals were unveiled including over 20% increases in sales and revenue over 2010. All of our employees were informed of their key roles in the everyday marketing of the company in all that they do. They also learned of the company’s new marketing message, “creating a Red Carpet experience for all customers”.
In order to achieve its plan, the company had to increase it’s production capacity by over 20% adding two new fulltime crews during the first six months of the year. Through the efforts of our office manager, production manager and installation crews, we were able to recruit, hire and train six new production team members who have made a positive impact and helped the company meet its production team goals.
Of course, the production team couldn’t do its job if the sales were not there. The Dial One sales team, comprised of six members, was able to step it up and increase their sales production by an increase of over 20% in 2011. The three established team members have all had very good sales numbers in 2011 and they have been bolstered by three new sales reps hired in 2010 who have come into their own in 2011 and made significant contributions toward reaching the company’s sales goals.
A team of dedicated support staff in our office staff, paint shop, door shop, warehouse, showroom and new call center have all contributed to Dial One’s results in 2011 and in creating a Red Carpet experience for our customers.
In a down economy and in a down market, sales and revenue for Dial One have increased by over 20% (or over $1,000,000) in 2011 over 2010. The company will also exceed its profitability goals. The company has compiled a yearly score of 93 (out of 100) in the Renewal by Andersen homeowner satisfaction survey compared to the national average of 85. This has earned it Renewal by Andersen “best of the best” homeowner satisfaction awards in each quarter of 2011.
Fick Bros. Roofing Co., Baltimore MD
Fick Bros. really made lemonade out of lemons this year. They capitalized on the terrible weather, and put forth the effort to overcome slow production with heavy sales. It was extreme focus that gave Fick Bros. the advantage over their competition this year. The Fick Bros. staff has an expertise that only comes with years and years of experience. They proved that they are a company with a strong foundation that will not let setbacks interfere with success.
G.F. Sprague & Co., Inc., Needham MA
This past fiscal year G.F. Sprague not only met and exceeded all goals but did so in flying colors setting new heights for the company. This task is quite amazing considering the fact that we set all goals based on an 80% probability of attainment. The sales goal for the year was 5.1 million and we hit just over 6 million. Our W.I.P goal for the year was 5 million and we did over 5.5 million. Profits this year had roughly an 80% increase over least year’s already healthy bottom line.
We were able to achieve such remarkable results by implementing a strong marketing campaign which capitalized on this year’s historic weather events and brought us plenty of solid leads. Our sales team was able to maintain a great close rate of over 50% and a NSLI (net sales to leads issued) of about 35%. Important here was our change in outlook on conversion from measure to proposal. Historically we believed that a high conversion rate was a good thing. However, this year based on the results of our top salesman, Mark Vaccaro, who sold over 3 million it became more apparent than ever that the sale truly happens on the measure. The goal is to sell them the job not the next appointment. With this in mind we were able to move on from those customers who we were not a good fit for and spend more time in front of those who were thus yielding higher sales results.
With such high sales the question then became could production keep up with it while maintaining high quality measures. Our production team, lead by production manager Bob Scribner, did an outstanding job this year resulting in monthly and ultimately year’s work in progress numbers, the likes of which we have never seen. This was able to happen through streamlining a number of production processes, expanding forces, and putting in the hours.
Behind it all was a strong office crew who made sure that all departments could run at full power removing all bottlenecks. It was a constant battle this past year of chopping wood and forcing ourselves to take time to sharpen the blade. This past year, due to the amount of stress that was put on the seams of our company, we were forced to create more efficient processes to keep up with the work load. In the end not only were we able to keep up with the work load but greatly reduced our costs in doing so which contributed to an outstanding bottom line.
This past year cannot go by without mentioning its great owner, Jerry Sprague, who continues to put in the time and effort every day to support his company. At the age of 62 and coming off a quadruple bi-pass surgery, he has more fire than ever. I think sometimes they gave him a new heart of the 19 year old who started this company instead of just repairing his old one. Jerry continues to inspire everyday and this past year is a reflection of his hard work and all those around him.

Opal Enterprises, Inc., Naperville IL
Opal sets the bar very high. We put goals out there with a solid plan to achieve them. The company is agile, and makes changes with the flow of business to constantly improve. The company is a team and a family too. We work and play together as a team. We share each other’s successes and help overcome our adversities as well. There is a sense of togetherness that is ultimately responsible for our success.
Opal is on track to double our total sales and number of completed jobs over 2010. we also doubled in 2010 over 2009′s sales, so that was no easy feat. The groundwork we’ve laid in Naperville, Illinois has reshaped the landscape of competition. Some competitors are now using our proposal format. Some have raised prices to compete with us as a quality remodeler. Some have slashed prices and quality as a last ditch effort to survive. I can already see Opal as the premier exterior remodel company in Chicagoland for years to come.
Opal has gone from 2.9 Million in sales to nearly 5 million in sales in 1 year. WHY? Because the CCN offered a road map and we are willing to travel down the hard-work path! Rain Gutter Specialties, South Jordan UT
Even though things have been tough we have pushed through it and done well. We have dominated our market and are the only company with work. We have done this by following CCN best practices. Our marketing has not only been consistent but we have increased our market share by about 30%.
Our sales have increased ten- fold also. Our closing ratio as a company is nearly 50% while maintaining a 65% gross profit.
The state of Utah awarded us “The best of state” award for residential sub contractor. (We were the only contractor in Utah to win this).
We have supported CCN and have been to every conference, as well as, bringing several employees to each one. We have organized our office and finally have systems in place that we started when we joined CCN 5 years ago.
The 4th quarter this year has been great. We are blowing our records out of the water and doing well.”
RGS They are still going in this economy…
Rogers Roofing, Hammond IN
When most companies are fighting for their lives in these troubling economic times we have flourished. And it’s not because we are working harder. We are working smarter!
But it did not start out that way. During the first quarter we faced the worst weather conditions that I can remember. Nothing got done, bills were racking up and no money was coming in. For the first time in my life, I really worried about whether we could fight through this. We made decisions that were very difficult but had to be done. Everyone sacrificed and it was hard. But now we are sitting here in November with 2 months of backlog, our debt has been paid and we are looking at a positive net profit. And the reason it worked is because we have a dedicated team that truly cares about each other and the success of this company.
You are nothing without great people and I am blessed to have some the best and brightest people working at Rogers Roofing!
